What is a Tooth Crown?

A tooth crown is a dental restoration that covers a tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, or appearance. It is also sometimes called a “cap.” A tooth crown can be made from many different materials, including metal, porcelain, resin, or ceramic. There are many different reasons why someone might need a tooth crown. For example, a tooth that is fractured or has been weakened by decay may need a crown to prevent further damage. A tooth crown can also be used to improve the appearance of a tooth that is misshapen, discolored, or otherwise cosmetically imperfect. In some cases, a tooth crown may be needed to support a dental bridge or dental implant. Regardless of the reason, a tooth crown can help to restore both the function and the appearance of your smile.

Types of Dental Crowns

  • Porcelain Dental Crowns
Porcelain dental crowns are made from a ceramic material that closely resembles the color and translucency of natural teeth. Porcelain crowns are often used for front teeth, as they provide a very natural-looking result.

  • Stainless Steel Dental Crowns
Stainless steel dental crowns are made from a strong, durable metal that is resistant to wear and tear. Stainless steel crowns are often used for molars or other back teeth, as they can withstand the heavy biting and chewing forces that these teeth experience. However, stainless steel crowns are very visible, and they may not be the best option for front teeth.

  • Zirconia Dental Crowns
Zirconia dental crowns are made from a strong, durable ceramic material that closely resembles the color of natural teeth. Zirconia crowns are often used for front teeth, as they provide a very natural-looking result.
